US FIRST lady Michelle Obama paid a visit to Nelson Mandela yesterday on the second day of her trip to southern Africa.

Ms Obama, accompanied by her mother and two daughters, visited the 92-year-old former president and anti-apartheid icon at his home in Johannesburg’s Houghton suburb. The Nelson Mandela Foundation described it as a courtesy call.

Mr Mandela has not been seen in public since he was admitted to hospital in January.

He paid a visit to his home village last month, the first since he spent several days in hospital for a respiratory disease. Since then he has received medical care at home.

Mr Mandela retired from public life in June 2004 before his 86th birthday, telling supporters: "Don’t call me, I’ll call you."

Ms Obama earlier visited the foundation’s offices, viewing a display of archival items including Mr Mandela’s prison desk. Mr Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, lead the tour. Ms Obama’s Africa visit includes Botswana. Reuters
